Inspiration

Last week, I saw paper sculpture birds by Aimee Baldwin at 'Castle in the Air' on 4th St. Berkeley. Very nice,
interesting to compare to the effect of wool birds.
Check out her work at vegantaxidermy.com

PS 1/11/12: Article today in the Chronicle about the
artist and her birds:http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2012/01/11/DDCR1M3CLP.DTL

On independence Day we took a hike on the Palomarin coast trail above Bolinas.
My daughter spotted this spotted owl sitting right
above our heads. Spotted owls have all black eyes.
He looks like he already is a wool sculpture.

CAVE: Lead in French Garlic Grater, made in Spain

At the MakerFaire in San Mateo, May 21-22
there was a booth selling colorful garlic graters.
I tested the glaze at home with a lead kit
(you can buy it at stores selling paint for about $ 6
for 2 test tubes). It tested positive = detected lead.

I've contacted the seller and suggest you do the same.
Don't rub your food on lead!

Moss Landing - Marine Laboratory

Went to an open house at the Marine Laboratory in Moss Landing last weekend. They had some very cool
artsy decorations on pillars looking like a marine life
post in the ocean. It's made from egg cartons with
feathers = barnacles, balloons = seaweed, pipe
cleaners = sea anemones.

Also saw some sea otters in the ocean outside.

Let Dogs be Free at Fort Funston!

We love going to Fort Funston with our dog.
Please write to save it.
This is what I wrote the Golden Gate National Park
district:
The picture of my kids running with our dog - my daughter's hair flying, the dog's tail spinning - is to me, a sight of extreme beauty, exhilaration and joy.
It's a picture of happy childhood days. I seek out these off leash places to recapture this picture. Every time, I feel immense gratitude that this is still possible, in a world where children are getting increasingly nature deprived.
We got our dog, my first, a couple of years ago from a shelter. It was immediately apparent that 'walking the dog' is a terribly inapt expression. Anyone who has seen a dog sprint, scamper, play and run for balls and twigs, realizes this in a split second. Dogs were made to run. Children were made to run.
After discovering Fort Funston, we've called it 'Disneyland for dogs'. It is worth a special trip. As we approach our dog will whimper with excitement. There are always tons of dogs of all different breeds and sizes. On sunny weekends it is packed.  An enormous amount of JOY, in people and dogs alike, is generated at Fort Funston. It would be a sad day if that JOY was killed by restrictions.

Native Animals for school mascots!

I was thinking about School mascots. My kids' old school
had a jaguar, now it is 'eagel'(unspecified species).
Mascots seem to be mostly perfunctory animals.
With all the wonderful animals in California, wouldn't it
be wonderful if schools actually 'adopted' a native
animal, studied it on Earth Day or built projects around
it. There could be newts, raccoons, alameda whip snakes...
Schools could have competitions for T-shirts designs
instead of getting commercial, run-of-the-mill designs.

Kudos to Santa Cruz for adopting the banana slug!

I'm originally from Sweden. I have lived in Newark, in the East Bay (of the San Francisco Bay), for the last 16 years. I have a husband, two kids in their tweens
    and teens,
and a dog, Scamper (see Gallery 4), 2 cats, 4 chickens. I've always been doing some kind of drawing, painting or different creative pursuits. Needle felting is a lot of fun right now.
