I was thinking about School mascots. My kids' old school
had a jaguar, now it is 'eagel'(unspecified species). Mascots seem to be mostly perfunctory animals. With all the wonderful animals in California, wouldn't it be wonderful if schools actually 'adopted' a native animal, studied it on Earth Day or built projects around it. There could be newts, raccoons, alameda whip snakes... Schools could have competitions for T-shirts designs instead of getting commercial, run-of-the-mill designs. Kudos to Santa Cruz for adopting the banana slug!
